Martinez studerte ved Univerisdad de Puerto Rico i byen Arecibo. Bad Bunny oppnådde stor popularitet på SoundCloud og fikk kontrakt med plateselskapet Hear This Music med utgivelse av singelen «Diles» i 2016. Singelen regnes som hans store gjennombrudd og førte til at Benito oppnådde raskt suksess i det latinamerikanske urbane musikkmiljøet. Under et intervju uttalte sangeren at han har drevet med musikk siden 2008.
