Filip II (1527–1598) var konge av Spania 1556–1598 og Portugal 1580-1598. I hans tid kom den epoken som gjerne kalles Spanias gullalder. Men nedgangstidene begynte også mens han regjerte. Filip var en samvittighetsfull og religiøs mann, men han var også intolerant og humørløs. Mye av det han satte seg fóre slo feil, særlig hans anstrengelser for å hindre at Nederland ble uavhengig, og hans forgjeves forsøk på å erobre England med den store armada.

Isabel Osorio (circa 1522 – October 1589) was a Spaniard courtier and the long-term mistress of Philip II, King of Spain.

Margaretha von Waldeck (1533 – 15 March 1554) was a German noblewoman. She was the daughter of Philip IV, Count of Waldeck-Wildungen (1493–1574) and his first wife, Margaret Cirksena (1500–1537), daughter of Edzard I, Count of East Frisia. One author theorized in the 1990s that her life influenced the fairy tale of Snow White. It is said she is buried in Brussels where the Place de la Bourse/Beursplein is now located.

Eufrasia de Guzmán (fl. 1592) was a Spanish courtier. She was the long-term royal mistress of King Philip II of Spain.

She was the lady-in-waiting of Joanna of Austria, Princess of Portugal from 1550. She was the mistress of Philip in 1559–1564, when the king waited for his wife Elizabeth of Valois to be old enough to sexually consummate their marriage.

She had a son with Philip in 1564, after which Philip arranged a marriage for her (to a prince of Ascoli) and terminated the relationship.
